In 1829 the Reverend Bostwick planted grapevines behind his Hammondsport rectory.  Little did he know that he also planted a seed that would mature to become the New York State wine industry.  In 1860 the Pleasant Valley Wine Company was formed, becoming U.S. Bonded Winery #1.  Hammondsport is known as the "Heart of the Wine Country" and the wines from the Keuka Lake Wine District are known world wide.  The hills that surround Keuka Lake are home to numerous awarding winning wineries and vineyards.
